Third Bismarck Sustainability Series to be Held June 23 “Healthy, livable and walkable communities”

Bismarck, N.D.  – Great ideas, great neighborhoods and a great community (the “3 G’s”) is the theme and focus of the Bismarck G3 Sustainability Series.  The third topic in the series will focus on healthy, livable and walkable communities and the individual and community-wide benefits of well designed neighborhoods.  This session will be held Tuesday, June 23, 2009,  at the Civic Center Exhibition Hall Meeting Room. Registration  is at 8 AM. Registration fee includes lunch and is $40 per person at the door.  This series will focus on healthy, livable and walkable communities and the individual and community-wide benefits of well designed neighborhoods. 

Bismarck G3 Sustainability Series Program

8:30 – 9:15AM – “Where We Live Makes a Difference…Toward Sustainable AND Healthy  Communities”
Deanna Askew, Licensed Registered Dietitian (LRD), Healthy Communities and Healthy Weight Coordinator, ND Department of Health and Karen Ehrens, LRD, coordinator, with the Moving More, Eating Smarter Communities Program, will share how creating sustainable communities is good for your health.

9:30 – 10:30 AM – “Incorporating Health Into City and County Comprehensive Planning”
Tracy Bade, Planner for the Carver County Division of Public Health, will discuss options and examples of ways to incorporate health into planning and design decisions.
                                              
10:30 – 11:30 AM – “The Proximate Principal: The Impact of Parks and Open Space on a Community”
Dr. Crompton, a Distinguished Professor at Texas A&M University Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Sciences will discuss what kinds of impacts parks, recreation, water features and facilities have on a community in terms of health, quality of  life, livability and return on investment.

11:45 AM – 1 PM – Lunch and Keynote Address  – “What if We Built Bismarck Around Places? Placemaking as an Approach to Health, Vitality and Sustainability”
Ethan Kent, Vice President of Project for Public Spaces, will share his experiences in initiating and leading partnerships with agency and advocacy leaders in cities to build capacity on all levels, implement demonstration projects and facilitate systemic change.
