Bismarck, N.D. – The City of Bismarck Public Works is asking citizens for help during flood cleanup.
They are asking citizens particularly those in the Fox Island area to sort their flood related debris before disposing of it at the City landfill. Please separate the garbage prior to bringing it to the city landfill as follows:
Please Separate Debris as follows:
1. Inert waste – this will likely be most of material brought to the landfill during flood clean-up. “Inert waste” includes items such as carpet, sheetrock, books, paper, cardboard, wood, insulation, and furniture. TV’s and electronics must be removed and disposed of separately.
2. Food waste – Place this in a separate container. This is considered household waste suitable for the municipal landfill.
3. Hazardous Materials – solvents, cleaners, acids, chlorine, lead, mercury, pesticides, weed killers, gasoline, oil, chemicals, antifreeze, and batteries. Please keep materials in original containers with lids closed. Transport containers upright in a plastic lined box.
Electronics – TV’s, computers, etc. Place in a separate container.
Hazardous materials and electronics will be disposed of at the Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Center at the landfill.
4. Metal and appliances – Keep separated so they can be recycled.

City of Bismarck Declares Snow Emergency
Bismarck, N.D. – A Snow Emergency has been declared and all designated snow emergency routes are included in this emergency declaration. Parking is prohibited on designated snow emergency routes; vehicles must be removed from these roadways and parked off the street on driveways or parking ramps. Snow gates are still being used when possible. Due to the 12 + inches of snowfall and the blowing and drifting snow conditions, the snow gates will not be able to hold back the large volume of snow that is in the plow at all times. We ask that citizens work together with their neighbors to open up driveways and mailboxes that may become blocked.
Street crews have plowed the emergency routes twice since 12:01AM on March 30, 2009 and have begun plowing the major arterial streets this morning. We anticipate that we will continue to plow the emergency and major arterials all day Monday until the snow and wind subside. Once the blizzard is over, residential streets will begin to be plowed. Please remove vehicles from all city streets to aid in snow removal operation. Keep them off the street until the plows have cleaned your area.
We want to thank the citizens for their cooperation during this spring blizzard event.
We ask that contractors cleaning parking lots DO NOT push the snow into the street or across the street onto the boulevard. If you’ve already done this, please remove the snow and haul it to the landfill.
It is illegal to push, shovel or blow snow into the street, alley, or onto another person’s property. The fine for this violation is up to $1000 and up to 30 days in jail.
Note:
There is a snow plowing map on the City’s web site under documents in the Public Works Department.

RESIDENTS URGED TO MAINTAIN VIGILANCE OF FLOOD CONDITIONS
Bismarck, ND – The Cities of Bismarck and Mandan and the Counties of Burleigh and Morton are urging residents to leave their sandbags in place. The National Weather Service has forecasted a blizzard tonight and/or tomorrow which may bring 6-12” of snow followed by a slow warm-up. Local officials are concerned that the ice jams may break up and reform downstream as a result of this warm up which will potentially produce overland flooding. Apple Creek has not started to flow and rapid snow melt may also cause overland flooding.
Again, we are urging residents to keep their sandbags in place and remain vigilant with upcoming weather patterns and water flow. The combination of the additional snowfall, warming temperatures, and continuing risks with ice jam may cause severe overland flooding in the coming week.
Please stay tuned to your local media for additional information.
