Bismarck Fire Encourages Holiday Season Safety
Posted by: | CommentsBISMARCK, N.D. – The winter holiday season is upon us and unfortunately, it is also a time of increased fire potential because of Christmas trees, candles and electrical lighting. The following information will aid in reducing the danger of a fire in your home:
• When buying a Christmas tree look for one that is freshly cut and green. The needles should bend and not snap between your fingers.
• Find a cool spot for your tree, away from heaters, vents and the fireplace.
• When setting up your tree make a fresh cut ½ inch from the base for better water absorption. Make sure to water it daily!
• When large amounts of needles begin to fall off, it’s time to get rid of the tree.
Candles are a traditional and beautiful part of the holiday season. Nationally, there are 11,000 candle-related fires each year, resulting in 150 deaths and 1,200 injuries. When using candles, use the following safety tips:
• Make sure candles are in a secure tip resistant holder.
• Place them out of the reach of children and away from combustible materials.
• Never leave candles unattended! If you leave the room, extinguish the candles.
Each year, hospital emergency rooms treat about 10,800 people for injuries, such as falls, cuts and shocks, related to holiday lights, decorations, and Christmas trees.
• Check your indoor/outdoor lighting strings for wear or damage and replace any worn sets before hanging them for the season.
• Use only approved (UL) lighting with fuses.
• Ensure all electric lights and connections are secure and not overloaded.
By taking these simple precautions, your holiday season will be a safe and joyous one. Visit www.bismarck.org for more information or call (701) 355-1400.
