Traditional Media & New Media – The Debate Goes On
December 24, 2008 by Dakota Media Access · Leave a Comment
We are at a very interesting time in the world of marketing, as many are aware. With the ever-growing popularity of Facebook, YouTube and other user-generated content sites, it is a constant source of debate as to the future of traditional media (radio, TV, newspapers, etc) and new media.
At Dakota Media Access, we see our role in the same way that we always have. Helping individuals and non-profits gain access to equipment and skills to help them develop the digital media content in order to use multiple communication vehicles simultaneously.
While brands remain the same and consumption methods are changing, it all starts with developing relevant content. This is the service that we help provide to our communities.
Todd O’Neill, Managing Director at DoingMedia LLC, responds to a couple of articles on this subject. Below is a link to Todd’s article:

18% of consumers can’t tell HD from SD TV
December 12, 2008 by Dakota Media Access · Leave a Comment
According to a survey conducted by the Leichtman Research Group (LRG) http://www.leichtmanresearch.com/index.html 18 percent of HDTV owners think they’re watching high-definition shows, when in fact they’re viewing standard definition programming. The survey also stated that while the number of HDTV households almost doubled in the past two years, it was largely the result of on-going consumer purchasing of TV sets coupled with a dwindling supply of lower-end non-HDTV sets being sold. So it seems, according to this survey at least, the viewing experience is not motivating people to purchase HDTVs when only 22 percent cited picture quality and 7 percent cited the quality/quantity of HD channels offered as purchasing motivators.

Change.gov Swaps Traditional Copyright for Creative Commons
December 4, 2008 by Dakota Media Access · Leave a Comment
In what appears to be a major shift away from traditional copyright policy, the www.change.gov team Obama site has embraced the Creative Commons license this past weekend.
From their web site, www.creativecommons.org “uses private rights to create public goods: creative works set free for certain uses. Like the free software and open-source movements, our ends are cooperative and community-minded, but our means are voluntary and libertarian. We work to offer creators a best-of-both-worlds way to protect their works while encouraging certain uses of them — to declare “some rights reserved.” Creative Commons provides free tools that let authors, scientists, artists, and educators easily mark their creative work with the freedoms they want it to carry.”
This shift could allow for some innovative uses of the content from Change.gov. Stay tuned.
